1.PV Sindhu and SainaNehwal retained their top 10place in the latest Women’s singles rankings in badminton
In the recently released women’s singles ranking by Badminton World Federation, India’s star players PV Sindhu and SainaNehwal have retained 5th spot and 8th spot respectively. The ranking is topped by Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.
It is the International governing body for the sport of badminton recognised by the International Olympic Committee

3.Nagar Kirtan(Sikh religious procession) from Pakistan reaches India for the first time since Partition
To mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev , the Sikhism founder, a Nagar Kirtan , a Sikh religious procession was taken out for 1st time after Independence from Nankana Sahib district(birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev) of Pakistan’s Punjab province to Attari village in Amritsar,Punjab Indian side through the Attari-Wagah land route .
2019 marks the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Government of India(GoI) is celebrating the event throughout the country and across the globe for a period of one year from November 2018 to November 2019.

The World Bank data for 2018 showed that India is the 7th largest economy in the world in global GDP rankings at $2.73 trillion
- India’s GDP rose from $2.65 trillion in 2017 to $2.7 trillion in 2018.

iii. It still remains the fastest-growing major economy in the world.

5.2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award won by Ravish Kumar for journalism
India’s senior executive editor of NDTV, Ravish Kumar was awarded 2019 Raman Magsaysay Award which is regarded as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize. He was awarded for “harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless”. Four other individuals were declared winners of this award along with Ravish Kumar.

6.Lok Sabha to become paperless from next session
On July 31, 2019, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Om Birla announced that the Lower House (Lok Sabha) will become paperless from the next session. It will save crores of rupees to the exchequer/ national treasury.
7.Free electricity up to 200 units in Delhi: CM Arvind Kejriwal
The Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal of the AamAadmi Party (AAP) announced free electricity to those consuming up to 200 units a month with effect from August 1, 2019.
i. Consumption of electricity between 201-400 units will get a 50% subsidy.
ii. For consuming 250 units of electricity, people will have to pay Rs 252, for 300 units- Rs 526 and for 400 units- Rs 1075.
iii. The allocation to subsidy will approximately remain the same from Rs 1800 crore to Rs 2000 crore.
8.On August 5, 2019, Government announced to repeal Article 370 [except the first clause 370 (1)] and Article 35A which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced to bifurcate the state into 2 Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature like Delhi and Puducherry, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature like Chandigarh.
About Article 370:
- History: In October 1947, the then-Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir signed the ‘Instrument of Accession’, which specified three subjects- Foreign affairs, Defence and Communications on which J&K would transfer its powers to the government of India. In July 1949, Sheikh Abdullah, the then chief minister of J&K, and three other colleagues joined the Indian Constituent Assembly and negotiated the special status of J&K, leading to the adoption of Article 370.
- Provision of Article 370: Parliament needs the J&K government’s nod for applying laws in the state except for defence, foreign affairs, finance, and communications. Citizens from other states cannot buy property in J&K and the Centre has no power to declare financial emergency. It binds the state of J&K to the Indian Union.
- Article 370(1)(c): It explicitly mentions that Article 1 of the Indian Constitution applies to Kashmir through Article 370. Article 1 lists the states of the Union.
- Laws not applicable due to Article 370: Due to Article 370, Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE), Right to Information (RTI), CAG and many Indian laws aren’t applicable in Kashmir which has a situation of corruption.

24-year-old VineshPhogat won her 3rd consecutive gold in women’s 53kg category in the Poland Open Wrestling Tournament in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. She defeated wrestler Roksana of Poland by 3-2. She had won gold at the Grand Prix of Spain and at the YasarDogu International at Istanbul, Turkey in July 2019.
10.Microsoft’s Bill Gates regains the spot of the second richest person in the world in Bloomberg Billionaire Index
The co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates with $106 Billion, became the second richest person in the world again, by surpassing Europe’s richest person Bernard Arnault, French luxury good (Louis Vuitton Moét Hennessy) tycoon, as per Bloomberg Billionaire Index.
i. Bernard Arnault as of now is the third richest person in the world with $97.8 Billion wealth.
ii. Jeff Bezos of Amazon still holds his no.1 spot as the world’s richest person.
iii. As of August 4, 2019, Asia’s richest person MukeshAmbani slipped to 18th place with worth standing at $47.2billion in the index as his wealth decreased due to a 7 percent drop in share prices of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL).
11.Hilary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton teamed up for the book on ‘Gutsy Women’
American politician, diplomat, lawyer, writer and public speaker Hilary Rodham Clinton (called as Hilary Clinton) and her daughter Chelsea Clinton are teamed up to write a book called “The Book of gutsy Women” to honour famous women personalities.
i. This book includes portraits of more than 100 famous women personalities.

iii. The book will be published by Simon & Schuster publications on October 1, 2019.

12.Mission Shakti sports initiative launched by Bollywood actor Aamir Khan
Mission Shakti which is an initiative to train athletes from Chandrapur and Gadchiroli for international events, like Olympics, by the Maharashtra minister SudhirMungantiwar, was launched by Bollywood film actor Aamir Khan in presence of Maharashtra sports minister Ashish Shelar.
A team of tribal mountaineers who climbed Mount Everest under the“MissionShaurya” by Maharashtra govt. were facilitated by Aamir Khan.
i. This initiative will focus on sports like archery, shooting, swimming, athletics, volleyball, weight lifting and gymnastics.
ii. The mega sports complex is planned at Ballarpur in Chandrapur and is to be funded by state govt. The Maharashtra govt. Started this initiative to train and produce athletes of Olympic level and to make them participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics
13.One- fourth of the world’s population is facing extreme water crisis
The World Resources Institute’s (WRI) President and CEO(Chief Executive Officer) Andrew Steer released a report on Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas stating that 17 countries in the world which hold a quarter of the earth’s population is facing extremely high water crisis.
i. India is one among those 17 countries facing extremely high water stress.
ii. All these countries are close to “Day Zero”.
This water crisis if not taken immediate actions has high possibilities of food insecurity, conflict and migration, and financial instability.
The WRI ranked 189 countries and their respective states and union territories based on water stress, drought risk and riverine flood risk.
- It is expected that by 2030 the number of cities in the extremely high stress category will increase to 45 with nearly 470million people.
India’s rank: India is ranked at13th place among the top 17 countries. India has a population thrice more than that of the other 16 countries.
India’s current scenario:
- For the first time, Northern India was included in the calculation for water stress, as the groundwater in Northern India has been severely depleted.
- Many places in India are experiencing chronic water stress especially the Chennai region of Tamilnadu gained global attention this year as it was severely hit by the water crisis.

Day zero does not mean that there is no water in our dams. it means however that the dams are at a crucial low level. The crucial low means that dam storage will be at 13.5%.This is when the city will turn off most taps leaving only vital services with access to water.

15.Former external affairs minister and BJP stalwart, Sushma Swaraj passed away
The senior BJP(Bharatiya Janata Party) leader and India’s former external affairs minister(EAM) Sushma Swaraj passed away in All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi due to a massive heart attack. She was 67.
16.Nation celebrates 5th National Handloom day on august 7 2019
The 5th National Handloom Day is celebrated on August 7, 2019 to honour the Handloom weavers of the country and also to highlight the Handloom industry. A function to mark the occasion was held at VigyanBhawan, New Delhi.

According to Ethnologue, a directory of languages which lists 7,111 living languages (languages that are still being used and spoken by people) worldwide, Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea, Country in Oceania tops the list with 840 living languages, while India ranks 4th position with 453.
i. The other nations in the top 5 positions include Indonesia (2nd ) with 710 living languages and Nigeria(3rdwith 524) and US (United States) came 5th with 335.

18.American tennis player Serena Williams tops the Forbes magazine’s highest paid women in sports list 2019
23-time Grand Slam singles winner and American tennis superstar Serena Williams tops the highest-paid women sports list 2019 for the4th straight year released by Forbes magazine with earnings $29.2million.
i. This calculation is based on Prize money, salary, bonus, endorsement between June 1 2018 and June 1 2019.
i. Japan’s Naomi Osaka who is currently standing second in the list with earnings of $24.3 million, became the fourth woman to earn more than $20million after Serana Williams, Russia’s Maria Sharapova and China’s Li Na.

19.India’s first underwater train will be launched in Kolkata
Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India’s first underwater train project is set to launch in Kolkata, West Bengal under the Hooghly river. It is a 16-kilometer long Kolkata Metro project.
20.World Biofuel Day celebrated on August 10, 2019
In order to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and to highlight the various efforts made by Government in the biofuel sector, August 10 is observed as World Biofuel Day. In India, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas organized the World Biofuel Day at VigyanBhavan, New Delhi.
21.On August 12, 2019, The founder of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and Father of the Indian Space Program, Vikram Sarabhai’s 100th birth anniversary observed across the country.
i. He was born on 12 August 1919 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He established Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad on 11 November 1947 & Indian National Committee for Space Research in 1962, which was later renamed the ISRO.
ii. He also founded the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology(CEPT), and the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD) in Ahmedabad. He also served as chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Commission. He died on 30 December 1971, Halcyon Castle, Thiruvananthapuram.
iii. ISRO launched the Chandrayaan-2 mission having lander called Vikram to honour the late Dr.Vikram Sarabhai that is scheduled to touch down on the lunar surface on September 7, 2019.
