1.SHREYAS portal launched by Prakash Javadekar for providing industry apprenticeship opportunities to youth
Union Human Resources Development Minister, Shri Prakash Javadekar, launched the Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills (SHREYAS) with an aim to provide industry apprenticeship opportunities to the general graduates exiting in April 2019 through the National Apprenticeship Promotional Scheme (NAPS) in New Delhi. The program will enhance the employability of Indian youth by providing ‘on the job work exposure’ and earning of stipend.

2.Commemorative notes to be released to mark Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary
On 27th February 2019, a UAE based company will release 12 bank notes of zero value which is the first ever limited edition commemorative series to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Key Points
i. Dubai based  Indian artist Akbar Saheb has designed these special notes. He was the main illustrator for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s book ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

3.An overview of National Water Awards 2018
On 27th February 2019, The Union Minister for Water Resources, River development and rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari presented 82 National Water Awards in 14 categories for the year 2018 at a ceremony held in New Delhi.
Key Points
i. The department of geology at Kakatiya University, Warangal Telangana received the best campus in India in terms of water usage. Punjab University secured 2nd position in the category.
ii. Madurai district received first prize for rejuvenations and creating new water bodies in the National Water Awards 2018.
iii. In best state category Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh bagged first, second and third prizes for resource management in India respectively.

4.Mukesh Ambani becomes first Indian to join top 10 richest list of Hurun Research
Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani became the first Indian and the only Asian to enter the Global top 10 richest billionaire list compiled by Hurun ResearchChina after a USD 9 billion or 20% surge in his wealth to USD 54 billion.

i. India is at5thspot with 104 billionaires. Last year, the country had added 32 billionaires, but this year it lost 28

ii. Mumbai and New Delhi are the billionaire capitals of the country

5.ISSF World Cup 2019
International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup was held in New Delhi, India from 20 February to 28 February 2019. It is the annual edition of the ISSF World Cup which is governed by International Shooting Sport Federation. It is a qualifier for 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo, Japan. India ranked 1st in the World Cup along with Hungary.

6.National Science Day observed on 28th February
The National Science Day is observed annually to mark the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect‘ by the physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman, well-known as CV Raman. He was born on 7th November 1888 in Tamil Nadu.

  1. He gave the theory of Raman Effectfor which he won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1930 and became the first Indian and the first Asian to win the prestigious award. He was also awarded Bharat Ratna in 1954 for his contribution in science, particularly Physics.
    ii. The theme for this year’s National Science Day is ‘Science for the People and the People for Science

7.The 91st Academy Awards (commonly known as Oscars), presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 2018, on February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

Highlights of the 91st Academy Awards:

  • It was the first ceremony in three decades, since the 61st Academy Awards in 1989, to be conducted with no host.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody won the most awards in total with 4, while Roma, Green Book, and Black Panther won 3 awards each.
  • India-set short film, “Period. End of Sentence.”, a short documentary film based on menstruation won the Oscar for “Best Documentary Short” category. It is directed by Iranian-American film director, Rayka Zehtabchi.
  • ”Black Panther”  became the first superhero film to win “Best Original Score”.
  • ”Roma” created history by becoming the first Mexican feature to win “Best Foreign Film” Oscar.
  • Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart became the first African-Americans to win Oscar in Product Design category for Black Panther.

8.Moody has projected Indian economy growth at 7.3% for 2019-20
According to the US-based rating agency – Moody’s quarterly Global Macro Outlook which was released on 1st March, 2019, Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.3 per cent in 2019 and 2020.

9.Zero Discrimination day observed on 1st March
Zero Discrimination Day observed on 1st March is an annual worldwide event that promotes diversity and recognizes that everyone counts.Theme- “Act to change laws that Discriminate”.

10.Govt. working on a new scheme for unorganised food processing sector: Gram Samridhi Yojana
Gram Samridhi Yojana, a Rs 3,000 crore scheme funded by the World Bank and the Government of India, is being worked upon by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries in order to strengthen the unorganised food processing sector concentrated in rural areas.
i. Roughly 66% of unorganised food processing units are in rural areas and of these, 80% are family run.
ii. The scheme is aimed at helping the cottage industryfarmer producers’ organisation and individual food processors to increase capacity, upgrade technology besides skill improvement, entrepreneurship development and strengthening the farm-to market supply chain.
iii. World Bank will be giving Rs 1,500 crore and Rs 1,000 crore will be borne by the Centre while state governments will put in Rs 500 crore.
iv. The scheme will be run in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab for a five-year period in the initial phase and thereafter in other states of the country.

12.Abu Dhabi hosted Organization of Islamic Corporation (OIC) meeting
On 2nd March 2019, Abu Dhabi hosted the 46th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC). It was a two-day gathering dedicated to discuss ways to combat hate speech, extremism and conflict in the region.

  1. This is the first time that India participated in the meetingSushma Swarajattended the inaugural session of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation meeting in Abu Dhabi where she was welcomed as a “guest of honour”.
    ii. OIC is an influential grouping of 57 Islamic countries.

13.Ayushman Bharat and Uber ink partnership for providing free healthcare for drivers  
The National Health Authority (NHA), which is the apex body responsible for implementation of Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uber– a ride-hailing app to provide free healthcare services to Uber drivers.

14.World Hearing Day: 3rd March
World Hearing Day is observed on 3rd March every year by Office of Prevention of Blindness and Deafness of the WHO (World Health Organization). The Theme for this year’s World hearing day is “Check your Hearing.

15.World Wildlife Day observed on March 3
World Wildlife Day is observed on 3rd March every year to spread awareness about wildlife. This date was designated as the World Wildlife Day on20 December 2013 at the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

16.President gave assent to Ordinance for voluntary use of Aadhaar as ID proof for bank account and SIM
On 3rd March 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind has given his approval for an Ordinance which allows voluntary use of Aadhaar as ID proof for opening bank accounts and obtaining mobile SIM.The ordinance gives effect to the changes in the Aadhaar Act such as giving a child an option to exit from the biometric ID programme on attaining 18 years of age.

17.‘Sampriti-2019’ commenced at Tangail in Bangladesh
The eighth edition of joint military exercise ‘Sampriti-2019’ between the armies of India and Bangladesh was commenced on 3rd March, 2019, which aimed to increase mutual cooperation and camaraderie with an impressive ceremony in Tangail, Bangladesh.

Key Points
i. This exercise will be conducted till 15th March as a part of the ongoing India-Bangladesh defence cooperation.
ii. The motive behind this exercise is to hone their tactical and technical skills in countering insurgency, counter terrorism and aid to civil authorities for disaster management in an UN peace keeping scenario involving a combined deployment at a battalion level.

18.Prayagraj Kumbha Mela 2019 makes it to the Guinness World Records
Prayagraj Kumbh Mela 2019 organised from 15th January 2019- 4th March 2019 in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh has made it to the Guinness World Records in three sectors.
These sectors are:

  • The largest traffic and crowd management plan.
  • The biggest painting exercise of public sites under “Paint My City” scheme.
  • The biggest sanitation and waste disposal mechanism.

These exercises were performed from February 28 to March 3.

19.22 GPS stations set by GSI across India
In order to identify seismically hazardous zones and encourage mapping activities, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) launched 22 permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) stations across India, which is a part of its objective to establish and maintain a network of continuously operating 35 permanent GPS stations in a phased manner.

i. 22GPS permanent stations have been set up and remaining 13 will be operational by March 2020.

20.Gurugram became world’s most polluted city in 2018
On 5th March 2019, Gurugram in the National Capital Region (NCR) emerged as the most polluted region in the world in 2018 as per 2018 World Air Quality Report.

Key Points
i. As per the report, Delhi is the most polluted capital in the world. In the list of polluted cities, Delhi ranked 11th.
ii. Out of the top 10 polluted cities in 2018, seven were India, which are Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bhiwandi, Noida, Patna and Lucknow.
iii. The report was based on a new study by Swiss based company IQ Air AirVisual and non profit organization Greenpeace on information from over 3000 cities.
iv. Bangladesh became the most polluted country closely followed by Pakistan and India while Iceland, Finland, Australia, Estonia and Sweden were among the least polluted countries.

21.India collaborates with four nations to protect Asian rhinos
India decided to collaborate with BhutanNepalIndonesia and Malaysia with an objective to increase the population of three Asian rhino species – Greater one-horned rhinoceros, Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino, by signing the New Delhi Declaration on Asian Rhinos 2019 at the recently held Second Asian Rhino Range Countries meet, at Indira Paryavaran Bhawan, New Delhi.
i.The meet was organised by the environment, forest and climate change ministry in collaboration with IUCN Asian Rhino Specialist Group, WWF- India and Aaranyak.
ii. As part of the declaration, the above Rhino Range Countries also agreed to review the population of the three Asian rhino species every 4 years to reassess the need for joint actions to secure their future.
iii. The Greater one-horned rhinoceros is found in the Indian sub-continent.

22.Mukesh Ambani ranks 13th richest person with $50 bn net worth in the Forbes Billionaire List
Reliance Industries Chairman, Mukesh Ambani, jumped six positions to rank 13th on Forbes World’s Billionaires list with USD 50 billion wealth and leads 106 billionaires from India on the list where Wipro Chairman Azim Premji ranked 36th with USD 22.6 billion wealth.

i. Last year, he was ranked 19th with USD 40.1 billion.
ii. The list was topped by Amazon’s Jeff Bezosand family with USD 131 billion wealth followed by Bill Gates (USD 96.5 bn) and Warren Buffet (USD 82.5 bn).
iii. Other Indians in the list include:

23.Delhi government launches app ‘One Delhi’ to track bus, metro services
A commute-planning app “ONE Delhi” was launched by Kailash Gahlot, Transport Minister of Delhi to allow users to plan their travel efficiently across government transport facilities.

The International Women’s Day was observed on 8th March 2019. The theme for this year is Think equal, build smart, innovate for change.

25.Kerala’s Marayoor jaggery gets GI tag
On 8th March 2019,Marayoor jaggery from Idukki, Kerala gets Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the central government.This jaggery is made from sugarcane and no chemicals are added during the manufacturing process which makes it a world class delicacy.

26.Pulse Polio programme for 2019 launched by President on the eve of National Immunisation Day
On 9th March 2019, the Pulse Polio programme was launched by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. The launch took place by administering polio drops to children below five years at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
The programme was launched on the eve of National Immunisation Day which was observed on 10th March 2019
