1.Overview Of ICC Men’s World Cup 2019

The ICC Men’s World Cup 2019 was the 12th Cricket World Cup held in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July 2019. It was administered by International Cricket Council (ICC). The cricket format was One Day Internationals (ODIs). 10 teams participated in the cricket tournament with a total of 48 matches played between the teams.

3.World Youth Skills Day 2019 observed on July 15
World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) was observed on July 15, 2019. It is celebrated to create awareness on the importance of investing in youth skills development. The theme for the year is “Learning to learn for life and work”.

4.Hima Das bagged her 3rd international gold within two weeks at the Kladno Memorial Athletics Meet 2019 in Czech Republic
Star Indian sprinter Hima Das (24) from Assam clinched her 3rd international gold within two weeks in women’s 200m race with a time of 23.43 seconds and Muhammed Anas Yahiya (Kerala) also won gold in the men’s 400m with the time of 45.21 seconds at the Kladno Memorial Athletics Meet 2019 in Czech Republic.

5.MD of IMF Christine Lagarde resigns 
Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde, aged 63, has resigned from her post. She will formally step down on September 12, 2019.

6.Nelson Mandela International Day 2019 observed on July 18
Nelson Mandela International Day was observed on July 18, 2019. It marks the 101st birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela, who was born on July 18, 1918.

Key Points:
i. The day is celebrated since 2009 after United Nations (UN) passed a Resolution A/RES/64/13 declaring July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to “the culture of peace and freedom.”
ii. Late Nelson Mandela was the former President of South Africa (1994- 1999). He had spent 27 years in prison in his struggle against racism, poverty and social injustice.

7.India to be free of Tuberculosis by 2025
On July 16, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament (MP) in New Delhi, asked the parliamentarians to take up a social cause or an issue of human sensitivity as a mission. India has fixed a deadline of 2025 for eradicating tuberculosis (TB) against the global deadline of 2030. He stressed on the need to eradicate them. The aim of the mission is “TB Harega Aur Desh Jeetega”.
MoU: Union Health Ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministries of Defence,Railways and Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) to eliminate TB from India by 2025 in the presence of Minister of State for Health Ashwini K Choubey and Minister of AYUSH Shripad Nayak.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects lungs. The bacteria that cause tuberculosis are spread from one person to another through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.

8.“Tata” becomes India’s most valuable brand for  2019: Brand Finance India 100 2019 report
According to the London-based consultancy Brand Finance annual report , “Brand Finance India 100 2019”, “Tata” has become India’s most valuable brand for the second straight year in 2019 with the brand value of $19.6 billion followed by LIC(Life Insurance Corporation) (2nd )with $7.3 billion and Infosys (3rd )$6.5 billion.

i. The brand value of  Tata increased to 37% with $19.6 billion, the highest in the top 25 compared to $14.23 billion in 2018.
ii.TATA group’s brand present across autos, IT services, steel, and chemicals.
iii. Brand Finance, calculates the value of brands based on the ‘royalty relief approach’, which estimates likely future sales that are attributable to a brand based on the royalty rate.It also ranks brands based on its strength & performance with its competitors.

9.8th edition of Hand-in-Hand Military exercise 2019 between India, China to be held in Meghalaya in December 2019
The 8th edition of Hand-in-Hand(HiH)Military exercise 2019 between India, China will be held in December 2019 at Umroi near Shillong in Meghalaya.
Key points:
i. The exercise will focus on transnational counter-terror operations, the establishment of a joint command post, joint combat, and HADR (humanitarian assistance and disaster relief) missions.
ii. The 7th edition was held at Chengdu, China in December 2018.
iii. HiH: The exercise was started in 2007 in Kunming. The drills got hindered in the 6th edition 2016 in Pune because of a 73-day standoff in Doklam in Sikkim sector of the border. between Indian and Chinese forces. In 2018, the situation eased and the troops of the two sides interacted once again in China.

Key Highlights:
i.  This is the first time that UP(Uttar Pradesh) get a woman Governor as Anandi Ben Patel since its inception in 1950. Sarojini Naidu was the first Governor in 1947 but the state was then known as the United Provinces.

11.Former 3 time Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit passed away in New Delhi
On July 20, 2019, Former 3-time chief minister of Delhi from Congress Sheila Dikshit passed away at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla in New Delhi due to cardiac arrest. She was 81 years old.

Key Points:
i. Born on March 31, 1938, in Kapurthala, Punjab, she had served as the president of Delhi Congress, chief minister of Delhi for 15 years from 1998-2013 and the governor of Kerala.
ii. She became a Member of Parliament (MP)  for the first time from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh in 1984.
iii. She was appointed as the president of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 2019 and contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha election against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Manoj Tiwari from the North-East Delhi parliamentary seat.
iv. The longest-serving chief minister of Delhi was the recipient of 2010 Dara Shikoh award by Indo-Iran Society and Delhi Women of the Decade Achievers Award 2013 by All Ladies League for Outstanding Public Service.

12.ABIPBL to shut down within 18 months of launch
Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank (ABIPBL) which had started its operation on February 22, 2018, will shut down its operations within 18 months of launch due to “unanticipated developments in the business landscape that have made the economic model unviable”.

13.Chandrayaan-2 Launched Successfully From SDSC, Sriharikota, AP

On July 22, 2019, India’s heaviest rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk-III, nicknamed ‘Bahubali’ carried the Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh. It is a Rs 978-crore project. The target is to find more evidence of water, clues about the moon’s evolution and work the natural satellite as a test bed for more space missions concerning the solar system. It will be the first operational flight of GSLV-Mk-3 which is a 640-tonne rocket.

Key Points:

  • Background: Originally, it was planned to be lifted off on July 15, 2019. But the plan was aborted by the Indian Space Research organization (ISRO) due to a technical glitch.
  • Mission: The Chandrayaan 2 mission is set to explore the south polar region of the Moon, which is also known as Dark Side of the Moon due to the absence of sunlight in and around the craters of the Lunar Polar surface. It will explore the uncharted lunar south pole, 11 years after Isro’s successful first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, which made more than 3,400 orbits around the moon and was operational for 312 days till August 29, 2009.
  • Components: It carried 3 components namely the Orbiter, The Lander ‘Vikram’, and the Rover ‘Pragyaan. The Lander has been named after the father of the Indian Space Programme, Dr Vikram A Sarabhai. The life span of Vikram is one lunar day which is equivalent to 14 Earth days. It has the capability to communicate with The Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu near Bangalore and can also communicate with the Rover and the Orbiter too.
  • Schedule: Chandrayaan-2 will take 54 days to accomplish the task of landing on the Moon through meticulously planned orbital phases.
  • Credit: It is world’s first mission to Moon’s South Pole. If successful, India will become the fourth nation to soft land on the Moon after the United States, Russia and China.

14.Maharashtra tops in ATM frauds: RBI
According to the data of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), accessed by the Times of India (TOI), Maharashtra registered the highest number of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) frauds in India for the FY 2018-19. It was followed by Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Amounts of less than Rs 1 lakh were not considered for the data.

15.Andhra Pradesh became the first state in India to reserve 75% private jobs for locals
Andhra Pradesh Assembly under the Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy passed the Andhra Pradesh Employment of Local Candidates in Industries/Factories Act, 2019, which reserves 75% private job to locals across factories, industrial units, joint ventures and private projects taken under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

16.UP Government to install 251-metre-tall statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya; Set to become the world’s tallest statue
The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has decided to install a 251-metre-tall statue of Lord Ram at Ayodhyawhich will become the world’s tallest statue surpassing the record held by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Statue of Unity in Gujarat (182-metre). Lord Ram’s statue would be installed on the 100 hectares of land near River Sarayu in Ayodhya.

Key Points:
i. For this purpose, the Uttar Pradesh government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government for technical assistance and guidance. Assistance will also be sought from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
ii. A separate unit of “Rajkiya Nirman Nigam” will be set up for the purpose of installation of the statue.
iii. A digital museum based on Lord Ram theme, interpretation centre, library, parking, food plaza etc will be the part of Ayodhya’s development.
7-foot tall statue of Lord Ram unveiled
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled the 7-foot tall statue of Lord Ram which depicts Kodamb Ram, one of the five avatars of Lord Ram, during his visit to Ayodhya at the Shodh Sansthan Museum.
i. The statue is made of a single block of rosewood and purchased for Rs. 35 lakh from Karnataka.

17.Pakistan opens historic 1,000-year-old Hindu temple in Punjab for worship after 72 years
On the demand of the local Hindu community, Pakistan opened Shawala Teja Singh Temple in eastern city Sialkot for worship for the first time since partition. According to the book ‘History of Sialkot’ by the late Rashid Niaz, the temple is 1,000-years-old.

ii. According to official estimates, 75 lakh Hindus live in Pakistan.

18.Reliance Jio is India’s largest telecom company 
Reliance Jio becomes the largest telecom company of India with 331.3 million subscribers overtaking Vodafone Idea whose customer base stood at 320 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2019.

i. Airtel moved to the third position and the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) stood at the fourth position.
ii. Vodafone Idea’s mobile phone users stood at 334.1 million in the quarter ended March 31, 2019.

19.After West Bengal, Odisha gets GI tag for its sweet version of Rasagola
On July 29,2019, The Registrar of Geographical Indications(GI), Chennai has awarded a GI certificate registering the sweetmeat as ”Odisha Rasagola” to the state of Odisha which will be valid till Feb 22, 2028. In 2017, West Bengal had secured the GI tag for ”Banglar Rosogolla” after a tug of war with Odisha since 2015 over the origin of the sweet.

Key points:
i. Records:  The eastern state of Odisha claimed its GI tag by submitting history old documents stated that Rasagola” has been a part of the state’s centuries-old rituals performed for Lord Jagannath and found its mention in a 15th century Odia epic ”Dandi Ramayana”.
ii. Registration:  The GI registration was conferred to ‘Odisha Rasagola’ under Section 16(I) or of authorized Section 17(3)(c) of Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999. The GI number 612 has been registered in favor of the Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC Ltd), a government of Odisha undertaking and Utkal Mistanna Byabasayee Samiti, a traders’ organization.
iii. Specialty: Odisha Rasagola made of chhena (cottage cheese) cooked in sugar syrup, which is very soft to feel, is juicy and non- chewy in consistency and without teeth pressure it can be swallowed.
iv. Color Theory: Odisha Rasagolas’, white in color with a round shape (non‐ spherical) are very specific, where without the addition of external color, various intensely-colored rasagolas are prepared using the principle of caramelization of sugar with specific methods of preparation.

21.Pink coaches” introduced for women by the Northeast Frontier Railway zone
As a new initiative that would enhance the security of women, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NRF) zone has introduced pink-colored SLRcoach (second Class -cum- Luggage-cum Guard’s Coach) for women. NRF Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) PranavJyoti announced that these pink coaches will help women passengers to identify their coach during rush hours.

Train operations
Railway Police Force (RPF) and ticket checking staff will be deployed by the railway authorities to stabilize the new system. Initially, a total of 8 trains in Rangiya district have begun the operations. They are-
i. 6 trains between New Bongaigaon and Guwahati
ii. 2 trains between Rangiya and Murkongselek.

21-year-old Vidisha Baliyan from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh became the first Indian, crowned Miss Deaf World 2019 which was held in Mbombela, South Africa. She is a former International tennis player who represented India in the Deaflympics.

25.Pakistan will send its first man to space in 2022
On July 25, 201, Pakistan informed that it will send its first astronaut to space in 2022 using China’s satellite launching facilities. The selection process of the astronaut for the space mission will commence from February 2020.

i. Pakistani Air Force will play a lead role in the selection process for the space mission.
ii. Pakistan’s National Space Agency SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) was set up in 1961. The first communication satellite was launched 50 years later with help from a subsidiary of China Aerospace and Technology Corporation.

26.World Tiger Day 2019 observed on July 29

  • World Tiger Day was observed on July 29, 2019. It is celebrated to promote the assurance of natural environment of tigers and increase awareness about the preservation of tiger. The day was built up in 2010 at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia where the signatories declared an agreement that the governments of tiger populated counties would double the tiger population by 2022.

27.Khelo India Youth Games 2020 will be held in Guwahati, Assam
Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju informed that the third edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) will be held in Guwahati, Assam from January 18-30, 2020.

Key Points:
i. It will be conducted in partnership with Indian Olympic Association (IOA), School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and Assam as host State.
ii. The inaugural edition of Khelo India was held in New Delhi in 2018 and Pune hosted the second edition of games in 2019.

28.World Hepatitis Day 2019 observed on July 28
World Hepatitis Day (WHD) was observed on July 28, 2019. It is observed to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis. The theme of the World Health Organization (WHO) for WHD 2019 is “Invest in Eliminating Hepatitis”.
